Adaptation Potential in Plants

Vienna, Austria (March 19-21, 2009)

Climate and environmental changes severely affect agricultural productivity. In a world whose population is projected to increase by 50% to 9 billion by 2050 and in which the area of arable land is steadily decreasing, understanding the mechanisms by which plants are able to adapt to a changing environment is vital. It is therefore timely to hold a FEBS Workshop on 'Adaptation Potential in Plants'. As adaptation can occur at different levels, the Workshop is divided into four sessions:

1. Genetics2. Epigenetics3. Stress Signalling4. Growth & Development

In addition to the specialised talks in the different sessions, there will be a Science & Society lecture by Bill Easterling, Dean of the Penn State College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, PA, USA, on the effects of climate change on agriculture. A number of short talks will also be selected from the submitted abstracts and there will be a poster session.
