Applied Aspects of Aerobiology

Harpenden, United Kingdom (November 19, 2008)

Aerobiology is a study of biological particles present in both outdoor and indoor air and has lead to important scientific advancements in understanding the dispersal, distribution and impact of human, animal and plant pathogens and allergens. Recently interest in the dispersal of microbes, and other plant and animal material by wind has increased to improve our understanding of biodiversity, ecology and the impact of climate change. Aerobiology is multidisciplinary, requiring an understanding of physics, which explains the movement of air and particles suspended in it, as well as biological processes affecting the production of particles or their effects. Various air sampling methods are available that can now be integrated with increasingly sophisticated diagnostic techniques. Immunological and molecular methods are providing answers as they allow quantification of particles that may not previously have been identified accurately and can even provide information at the sub-species level (antibiotic or pesticide resistance, race structure, etc).
