Postdoctoral Researcher in Aquatic/Terrestrial Biogeochemistry

Type of job: full-time

The Biology Centre CAS is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral scientist to join research activities within the framework of the Soil Water Interaction Research Infrastructure (SoWa RI).

Closing date: open until filled

About the employer

SoWa is a newly established part of the Biology Centre of the Czech Academy of Sciences, whose research predominantly addresses ecological topics, with a significant emphasis on biomedicine. The research involves collaboration across disciplines, the use of diverse methodological approaches (field ecology, mathematical modelling, ecology, molecular biology, genetics, taxonomy etc.) and a combination of analytical and holistic approaches to problem solving. Core facilities with shared equipment support all of the Centre’s scientific institutes. SoWa will primarily support research aimed at understanding key physico-chemical and biological processes responsible for providing ecosystem services, water runoff, water quality, and nutrient cycling (particularly nitrogen and phosphorus), with emphasis on organic matter decomposition and nutrient release. The main focus will be on ecosystems under anthropogenic pressure.

About the position

The National Research Infrastructure SoWa (Soil and Water) for the comprehensive monitoring of soil and water ecosystems in the context of sustainable landscape use has an opening for a postdoctoral researcher. The research infrastructure SoWa is designed to increase collaboration with the domestic and international research communities in order to address complex issues of soil and water interactions occurring at various spatiotemporal scales, from micro- to landscape levels. Successful candidate is expected to conduct research in the field of the flow of nutrients and organic matter within and between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, with emphasis on the whole catchment scale.

This is a challenging position, well suited for a biogeochemist with a PhD in biogeochemistry or related specialization, with broad research interests capable of developing her/his own research activities. The candidate will work in an interdisciplinary team of chemists, limnologists, microbiologists, and soil scientists.

The candidate should have an experience with data evaluation and publication. Effective management of time and resources, and good interpersonal/leadership skills are essential attributes of the successful candidate for this position. Good oral and written communication skills are required, as is the ability to supervise/mentor students and visiting scientists. On the longer term, the candidate is expected to lead a team working in her/his field of expertise.

Further particulars

Start date (as early as March 2017) is negotiable. The position is available until the end of 2019 and may be further extended based on the applicant's performance and funding opportunities. The salary is highly competitive in local standards. Ceske Budejovice is a medium-sized town ca. 150 km south of Prague with 100,000 inhabitants, a relaxed atmosphere, and a growing community of foreign scientists at the University and the Biology Centre. Three faculties and five research institutes dealing with aquatic and terrestrial biota are located on the same campus, allowing easy access to other researchers and resources. Both the town and the surrounding countryside provide numerous opportunities for research and leisure activities. Living costs are low by international standards. Courses of Czech language are provided for foreign staff to reach a basic level of proficiency in everyday situations.

Application

Applicants should submit a complete professional CV, list of publications, a statement of research interest and motivation for the application, and the names and contact details of two professional referees, by email with the subject: SoWa BGC to sowa@bc.cas.cz
