Recent Trends in Pharma Partnering

Date: 23.3.2012

With the current challenges facing the industry, large Pharma is increasingly looking to expand their pipelines with external science.  As the academic and biotechnology sectors have become increasingly successful at bringing innovative compounds and R&D technologies forward, a strong interest in partnership and collaboration between the sectors has continued to emerge.

The challenge for most biotech companies is funding the costs associated with clinical development and commercialization.  Licensing is an effective way for the partners to share development risk and use the partners' complementary abilities to advance the compound or program. But how do we bring the right parties together? What is big Pharma looking for and what is the best way to approach them?

On 23-24th May, 2012 Erik Lund from MSD will present at BioForum - the Central European Forum of Biotechnology and Innovative BioEconomy (Brno, Czech Republic). His topic "Recent Trends in Pharma Partnering" will highlight challenges facing the industry, MSD's approach to licensing and how to learn more about their areas of interest. At MSD, we are constantly looking for new sources of innovation. Early stage deals are very attractive for us and we are heightening our focus in this space. Our view is that there is a lot of scientific excellence taking place in biotech and academia and we want to be actively engaged in the Central European life sciences community - says Erik Lund, PhD, CLP Director, External Scientific Affairs, Worldwide Licensing, MSD.

Upcoming 11th edition of BioForum focuses also on following issues: Business models in Personalized Medicine, Optimizing drug development: Risk/Benefit Relation as a Success Factor, Biosimilars and new biotech products - Market and Development Opportunities in Central Europe, Clinical and preclinical research opportunities in Central Europe. The organizer of BioForum is Bio-Tech Consulting from Lodz, Poland (www.biotechconsulting.pl).
