Selection and characterization of new genetic resources for alternative utilization by means of DNA markers and analysis of quality parameters

Project:  Selection and characterization of new genetic resources for alternative utilization by means of DNA markers and analysis of quality parameters

Research institute: Agricultural Research Institute Kromeriz, LtD.

Description:
Annotation: Barley is one of the most important crop wordl-wide. Barley is used for malt production, however, its importance for feeding, food and pharmacautical industries or other industrial productions has been increasing. However, genetic resources suitable for alternative use are characterised in less extend in comparison with malting barleys or e.g. donors of disease resitances Methods suitable for efficient evaluation of DNA polymorhism will be used to develop markers for large-scale evaluation of genetic resources. Conformation and sequence polymorhism studies of imporatant aleles are expected to be an efficient approach. AFLP and microsatelite analysis will be empolyed for genotyping. Field evaluation of genetic resources along with measurement of some chemical, biochemical and physical properties of barley grains will lead in more detailed characterisation of genetic resources. Evaluation of some parameters using Image Analysis approach will be introduced and corelation among different data types describing evaluated genetic resources will be studied. The collection of genetic resources characterised from several aspects along with developed molecular markers and DNA profilles can significantly speed up the breeding process and production of barley with specicific end-use quality. Thus the benefit from barley production can increase.
