Enabling the next generation of stem cell research

Date: 13.6.2012

Yokohama, Japan - One of the key challenges for cell therapy has been that growing human stem cells has been considered difficult, time consuming and varying in terms of quality. Basically the tools to work with stem cells have not been good enough previously. However, a Swedish biotechnology company BioLamina AB has developed an innovation to manufacture biorelevant proteins that stem cells thrive on. These proteins called laminins are used to create a biologically relevant, standardized environment on tissue culture vessels for stem cell culturing. This innovation solves the issue of repeatability and low quality experiments making science and clinical research faster, easier and more reliable. Laminins can be the key to accelerate the development of new cures or better treatments for diseases like diabetes, Alzheimer's , and Parkinson's - enabling healthier, happier lives for hundreds of millions of us.

BioLamina introduces a new product called CLONEstem at the 10th annual meeting of International Society for Stem Cell Research in Yokohama, Japan. "CLONEstem is a biologically relevant stem cell clonal culture kit that makes single-cell plating, clone generation and derivation of new stem cell lines easy, reliable and standardized" says Kristian Tryggvason, BioLamina's CEO. "Laminin-521 together with other natural stem cell niche molecules facilitates clonal culture of human ES and iPS cells in a chemically defined and animal protein-free manner with a high single-cell survival rate" Kristian summarizes as the benefits of using CLONEstem. "This is just additional proof of the potency and specificity of our Laminin-521 for stem cell culture. It is natures choice for stem cells and therefore it just works!"

The BioLamina products have been widely taken into use by the leading research labs, as the most important tools for modern stem cell research. Recently several high-profile scientific articles have been published with BioLaminas unique products. For example, Dr. Miyanaris used laminin-511 to culture stem cells in his Nature article. "Control of ground-state pluripotency by allelic regulation of Nanog" Nature 483, 470-473 (22 March 2012).

About BioLamina AB

The background of BioLamina AB (founded 2008 in Sweden) goes to the Tryggvason family, scientist father and entrepreneur son. The product development is based on important innovations that the widely known and respected scientist Professor Karl Tryggvason created together with his research group. Kristian Tryggvason, PhD, MBA, and CEO of BioLamina, created a global business out of these innovations. Under Kristian's leadership, BioLamina has been listed twice among the 33 most successful and interesting new technology companies in Sweden by the Swedish technology publication NyTeknik. He is also known as the sixth most promising young CEO in Sweden, listed right behind the founders of Skype and Spotify by Shortcut.
