Anaerobic process or environment is one where atmospheric oxygen is not present.
In such conditions, the anaerobic microorganisms live, which may under certain conditions produce useful substances such as methane and ethanol (alcohol). This is used for example in anaerobic digestion.
Using microorganisms is engaged in biotechnology science.
